"Steve made
his name in the 1960s as an independent film |
|
maker. He is
a New Yorker
who came to the UK in the 1960s. His films generally
are WEIRD and
hard to read - disjointed, more like mind games really. He
is very fond of
making the viewer the onlooker so watching some of his
work can be
disturbing - one becomes a voyeur as the actors talk directly to you the
viewer. Most of his older films were shorts of between 10 and 30 minutes. One
called "Moment" was shown on Channel 4 a few years
ago which lasts
about 20 minutes and shows nothing but a woman's
face. She is smoking
and (we infer) masturbating but all you see is her facial expressions
which change and become more excited as the time passes!
It actually
works as a film. |

His
biography called "Trying to Shoot the Moon" (I think) was |
|
also shown on Channel 4
late one night. He also made a film for Channel 4's disability
series a few years ago called (I think) "Face of our Fear"again about
how we react and relate to disability. |

You know
about "Behindert" and "Outside In". The latter was |
|
made in
1981/82 in conjunction with ZDF the German TV company. "Behindert" is
earlier I believe. Both focus on Dwoskin's polio and its effect on his
relationships. In both one feels uncomfortable in some scenes just
watching." |
