NOTES |
Whimsical
portrayal of 'madness'
A brother, Sir Charles, (O'Toole) and sister, Hilary, (York) lives
together in a palatial mansion and are clearly very close. So close
they are comfortable being naked in front of each other.
She is committed to him in a caring way but he bullies her. And
suprisingly she is married to a local farmer. She's also having an
affair. In fact it appears she sleeps around.
Naturally the brother comes between them. It is hard to label the
brother as mentally ill he is better described as very selfish and
eccentric. And he drinks a lot.
On a shooting trip he shoots off his ear (shades of Van Gogh) though
he very quickly recovers without hospital treatment.
Eventually unable to cope the sister visits a home for the mentally
ill where she is told by a doctor "We don't do them much good but we
don't do them any harm either." And she decides to have her brother
committed.
Not exactly enlightening on any subject. Clearly derived from the
play by James Kennaway.
Made in Ireland and Scotland. |
