NOTES |
A young man
working in a bank keeps himself to himself and |
|
collects
butterflies. When he wins a large amount on the |
|
football
pools (like the lottery but require some skill) he buys a large house
and estate in the country. In the cellar he constructs a
comfortable living room. When this is finished he kidnaps
an art student whom he has fancied from afar. |
|
She is kept
locked in the room. He doesn't molest her but |
|
'preserves'
her like one of his butterflies. After trying to |
|
escape a
number of times a bond develops between them |
|
and he
promises to release her. Unfortunately he reneges on |
|
the deal. In
desperation the girl hits him with a shovel but |
|
draws back
from killing him. However during this attack there |
|
is a
rainstorm and she goes down with pneumonia. His |
|
dilemma is
whether or not to call for help which would |
|
incriminate
him. He decides in her favour but has left it so |
|
long she
dies. The film ends with his blaming her and his |
|
looking out
for another 'butterfly'. |
|
A difficult
film to make from John Fowler's novel. Most of the |
|
time there
are only the two people involved and it is probably |
|
beyond the
good-looking Stamp to suggest the oddity of |
|
someone who
would do such a thing. |
