This is the story of an adult man who behaves
and is treated as a baby. The whole family, mother, two daughters and
'the baby' live on welfare. Generally a welfare worker visits twice a
year. The mother explains "husband ran off and left us" , " a weak
man, no character." "We got used to being without a man." In fact each
child is by a different father and each abandoned her.A new social
worker comes on the scene and she is interested in the baby and she is
accused by the mother of spending too much time with 'baby'.
Apparently another social worker who showed the same attention
disappeared.
At her home where she lives with her mother-in-law we see that the
social worker is obsessed with her 'late' husband.
The film begins to take on a really odd feel when a baby-sitter
lets the baby suck her breast, caught by the mother she is beaten up.
One sister explains to the social worker that "baby was born
backwards." The social worker suggests a "special clinic for the
retarded." (though this conflicts plotwise with what happens later).
But the mother won't allow any 'treatment'. We see her later using an
electric cattle prod to control baby; "baby doesn't walk, baby doesn't
talk, baby doesn't stand."
The social worker is seen visiting The Greenview School for
Exceptional Children which involves real disabled children.
Later one of the sisters gets into bed with baby.
The social worker sees a specialist but she can't get enough proof
to get baby turned over to a public guardian (this is another red
herring). The mother makes a complaint against her and she is sacked.
The social worker threatens she will take her to court. The mother
plots to get her into her house where they spike her drink and
imprison her in the cellar. Baby helps her escape and she takes him
with her back to her home. She writes to the family saying she's in
the process of turning baby into a grown man, "your baby is lost to
you forever." So the mother and sisters break into her home to get
baby back and are murdered by her and her mother-in-law and
conveniently buried in the foundations of a swimming pool. Only then
do we discover that her husband is not dead but brain damaged and
acting like a baby and she wants 'baby' as a companion.
