NOTES |
The time is
1951 and the setting is mainly New Orleans. This |
is a complex
story with a twist in its tail. |
Mickey
Rourke plays, Angel, the kind of private eye who gave |
the
description "seedy" substance. It's one of Rourke's best |
parts. He is
hired by an effete Louis Cyphre played by DeNiro. |
His task is
to find Johnny Favorite. He was a singer who |
disappeared
in 1943 and was last heard of in a hospital in |
New York
state. He's there because of some kind of war |
Angel's
first call is to New York state but in no time he's |
following
the trail to New Orleans. Murder piles on murder, |
red herrings
come in netfulls and a few chickens are ritually |
slaughtered.
The significance of the involvement of war |
trauma is
seen only in retrospect at the end which I won't give |
From the
novel by William Hjortsberg "Falling Angel". |
