NOTES The time is 1951 and the setting is mainly New Orleans. This

is a complex story with a twist in its tail.

Mickey Rourke plays, Angel, the kind of private eye who gave

the description "seedy" substance. It's one of Rourke's best

parts. He is hired by an effete Louis Cyphre played by DeNiro.

His task is to find Johnny Favorite. He was a singer who

disappeared in 1943 and was last heard of in a hospital in

New York state. He's there because of some kind of war

trauma.

Angel's first call is to New York state but in no time he's

following the trail to New Orleans. Murder piles on murder,

red herrings come in netfulls and a few chickens are ritually

slaughtered. The significance of the involvement of war

trauma is seen only in retrospect at the end which I won't give

away.

From the novel by William Hjortsberg "Falling Angel".
