NOTES This film I remember vaguely and would say it's actually an

English TV film from the cast. Harrison is reasonably good

but Finlay is a superb actor. He played Iago to Olivier's

Othello in Olivier's film of the play.

Don Quixote is one of the greatest novels of all time written

when the novel as such really didn't exist. Consider that the

first novels in English (Defoe, Richardson, Sterne and

Fielding) weren't written until the early 18th Century.

Don Quixote is a gentleman who has become saturated with

the popular chivalric romances of the time. He believes that

he can re-introduce knight errantry by going forth on an old

nag to save and protect the weak and helpless. He is

accompanied by a peasant who he has enrolled as his squire.

Increasingly his illusionary world dominates his actions. By

the end he becomes aware of his state but then becomes ill

and dies.

Cervantes himself led an extraordinary life and lost the use of

his left hand fighting the Turks.

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616)

Versions also in 1915 and in 1923 directed by Maurice Elvey

Fernando Rey starred in a Spanish mini-series.
