NOTES Set in 19th Century New England.

The character Ethan Frome is a "cripple" and lives as an

outcast. He limps, has a bad arm and walks hunched over.

When a new pastor comes to the town he takes pity on Ethan

and learns from him what led to his present state. In

flashback we see how Ethan marries the hypochondriac

Zeena. A cousin Mattie is brought in to help the sickly Zeena.

In a loveless marriage Ethan is attracted to her and she to

him. They hold off but eventually succumb to temptation.

Shortly afterwards Ethan has an accident (I think it is a

sledding accident) which leaves him as we first saw him.

The novella was written in 1911 but the morality is firmly set in

the 19th century.

From the novella by Edith Wharton
