NOTES |
Set in 19th
Century New England. |
The
character Ethan Frome is a "cripple" and lives as an |
outcast. He
limps, has a bad arm and walks hunched over. |
When a new
pastor comes to the town he takes pity on Ethan |
and learns
from him what led to his present state. In |
flashback we
see how Ethan marries the hypochondriac |
Zeena. A
cousin Mattie is brought in to help the sickly Zeena. |
In a
loveless marriage Ethan is attracted to her and she to |
him. They
hold off but eventually succumb to temptation. |
Shortly
afterwards Ethan has an accident (I think it is a |
sledding
accident) which leaves him as we first saw him. |
The novella
was written in 1911 but the morality is firmly set in |
From the
novella by Edith Wharton |
