TITLE |
Clockwork Orange, A (1971) |
DISABILITY |
Limb
Wheelchair |
NOTES |
Notoriously
violent film banned from showing in the U.K. by |
Kubrick.
It's possible after Kubrick's death (March 1999) this |
Set in the
future ( 80s England) when gangs of youths are |
terrorising
the country. One of the victims is left paralyzed |
and in a
wheelchair. The leader of the gang, Alex, ends in |
prison and
is put through a brain washing regime. |
I've since
seen the film (on British TV) and I was not over |
impressed.
The film is a feast for the eye and the set |
designer
deserves the most praise. But the script is pushing |
its message
(of free will) with such force it slips over the |
edge of the
cliff. For example Alex's treatment includes being |
strapped to
a cinema seat with his eyelids held back and |
forced to
watch violent films. This form of aversion treatment |
is now old
hat and shows how dangerous it is to promulgate |
fashionable
ideas in fiction. |
From Anthony
Burgess's novel. |
