NOTES |
A love story
set in 1920s Feudal China. An old man buys a |

young bride
who remains barren because of his |

infertility/impotence. Frustrated he beats her. She falls in love |

with a young
relative of his who works for him. When she |

becomes
pregnant the baby is presumed to be the old man's. |

But then the
young man is paralyzed in an accident and |

unable to
move or speak. The child grows up believing the old man to be
his father |

beautiful to watch and always interesting, it was the first |

Chinese film
to win a Best Foreign Film Academy Award |
