NOTES |
Gideon is a
man with a learning difficulty raised by his aunt in |
|
South
Carolina. When his aunt re-marries she can no longer |
|
cope with
him so he goes to the nearest institution. |
|
Unfortunately for him this is a retirement home. |
|
Fortunately
for them his innocence sparks a new lease of life |
|
Christopher
Lambert plays Gideon which should be |
|
interesting.
Since "Greystoke" and "Subway" he hasn't really |
|
achieved
much in the way of quality. And here he plays |
|
someone from
rural Carolina, and he's French isn't he? No, |
|
he's
American, born in New York but raised in Switzerland |
|
and he went
to the Paris Conservatoire.
Now I've just seen this
film and it is an odd dish. I have a thing about false beards and
Heston 'sports' one of the worst in film. Lambert is quirky enough
in appearance to support the film's premise, if only he could act.
The whole is atrociously sentimental and I think it is meant to be a
comedy.
As Lambert's character brings new life to the old folks he himself
is transformed by leukemia which leaves him dead at the end but the
old folks more alive.
Look out, if you survive that long, for Heston kissing his
'girlfriend'. It's as chaste as if it were the day after the Hayes
code came into force.
