NOTES Floyd (Gene Hackman) runs a bar on an off-shore island in

Texas. His wife has drowned a year ago and he's given up on

life. His father-in-law lives with him and has Alzheimer's and

is in a wheelchair. He is looked after by a local man with

learning difficulties.

Despite a good cast the film doesn't really gel. The story a bit

cliched with someone wanting to buy the bar run by Hackman

because a bridge is going to be built to the island. And of

course the bar is in financial difficulties. A young woman who

works at the bar offers to lend/give him money. But his plan is

to burn the place down. Then his wife's remains are

discovered and he has identify them.

There are many quirky characters and incidents but they don't

add up to much. A young man with learning difficulties who

has just come out of mental hospital works for him and

carries a .22 gun. At one point he accidentally pushes Floyd's

wheelchair using father-in-law into the sea. Thinking the old

man dead he panics. But then the old man rises from the

dead.

A good sense of place and some good acting is spoiled by the numerous hectic incidents.
