NOTES |
Rowing with
his wife across a lake the husband has a fatal heart attack just as
he is telling her that she won't benefit from his family's estate if
he dies before his mother. She dumps his body overboard. She then
sets off for the family estate where she doesn't let on her husband
is dead.
The estate turns out for some reason to be in Ireland though most of
the actors are American. As relations between the two surviving
brothers, the mother and the 'widow' are revealed we learn in an
ominous way about a sister who drowned as a child.
The 'widow' is axed to death after discovering a child in the lake
(another lake of course from that in which her husband was dumped).
This is followed by the murder of the game keeper. The mystery is
eventually revealed by the family doctor who like Sherlock Holmes
carries a gun in his pocket and shoots the brother who has been
doing the killing.
The narrative progress is halting and the delivery of the dialogue
resembles early talkies. This film smacks more of Roger Corman than
Coppola though gourmands of horror might appreciate a few subtle
touches. |
