NOTES Set in New England before and during World War II.

Michael Caine plays Dr. Larch who runs an orphanage, is

addicted to ether and does abortions on the side. He also

delivers the babies of unwed mothers.

Tobey Maguire plays Homer who grows up in the orphanage

and learns under Dr. Larch's tutelage to deliver babies and do

abortions. Uneasy about the latter he leaves the orphanage

with a young couple, Wally and Candy, who visited Dr. Larch

for an abortion.

He gets a job picking apples and works and lives alongside

migrant (Black) workers who all live together in dormitories

(just as he had in the orphanage).

When Wally goes off to the war he falls in love with Candy.

Under Dr. Larch's care is a young boy with breathing

difficulties who spends time under a special canopy. He dies

while still young.
