Michael
Caine plays Dr. Larch who runs an orphanage, is |

ether and does abortions on the side. He also |

delivers the
babies of unwed mothers. |

Tobey
Maguire plays Homer who grows up in the orphanage |

and learns
under Dr. Larch's tutelage to deliver babies and do |
|
abortions.
Uneasy about the latter he leaves the orphanage |
|
with a young
couple, Wally and Candy, who visited Dr. Larch |
|
He gets a
job picking apples and works and lives alongside |
|
migrant
(Black) workers who all live together in dormitories |
|
(just as he
had in the orphanage). |
|
When Wally
goes off to the war he falls in love with Candy. |
|
Under Dr.
Larch's care is a young boy with breathing |
|
difficulties
who spends time under a special canopy. He dies |
|
