writes:
Warning: extremely gross humor, much of it making fun
of people with disabilities, never lets up,
IMDB commenters either loved it or hated it.
There are a large number of comments about the film on IMDB, but (in
the few I read) very little comment about the disability aspects of
the film, even though it's a _major_ part of the film.
A large part of the humor is disability related.
Two of characters, Whitey and Eleanore, are very small people,
brother and sister who are older and have lived together for all
their lives. Whitey is a major character in the
movie and in the lives of the people in the town, but
they ignore his importance and make fun of him. The Sandler
character (Davey) makes fun of Whitey (and his sister) too and plays
(disgusting) practical jokes on him. In addition to being small,
Whitey has epilepsy, two very different sized feet (as does his
sister), is albino with large patches of white hair on strange
places on this body (hence his name). Whitey is a lifelong volunteer
basketball referee and does odd jobs no one else can or will do to
make ends meet (they underpay him).
I decided to go back and read all the IMDB comments. My previous
statement still stands. There's lots of thoughtless disability
related statements among the comments, but I guess this the way
people everywhere talk?
"Anyone who didn't like this film is mentally handicapped and should
go back to first grade."
