NOTES I think it is set in 18th century.

A Frenchman survives being hanged by the British. He

escapes from the 'morgue' taking with him a young man who

was left to watch over his body.

On the run they find "a lunatic child" who has escaped from

her guards. Then they come upon a travelling fair where a

performance is given by dwarf players.

The girl travels with them but it is hard to say what is 'mad'

about her. At most she is "feeble-minded". And after a while

the boy says she is cured--from being in the fresh air. Her

original condition might have resulted from a fever though we

don't have enough information for a 'diagnosis'.

This drama sits so awkwardly with its mode of presentation.

At times it looks like historical tourism and an attempt to

educate us. In straining to be natural it achieves the opposite.

And the way the boy talks to his 'betters' seems at odds with

the strict class structure of the time.

Overall the film (as seen on TV) has a poor visual quality. It is

filmed with the same 'authenticity' as "Kes" by the same

director but the hesitant 'natural' speech doesn't sit well with

this period drama. An odd film which doesn't appear to have

any destination.

The dwarf performers are played by : Malcolm Dixon, Mike

Edwards, David Rappaport and Tiny Ross.

Note: There is a film of the same name Blackjack (1998) with

Dolph Lundgren.
