I would like to recommend you add the Academy Award nominated short
film The Collector of Bedford Street to your list under
documentaries.
The Collector of Bedford Street is about Larry Selman, the
director's 63 year old neighbor. Larry is a community activist and a
fundraiser who is living independently with an intellectual
disability. Because of his service to our neighborhood, the
community became concerned about Larry's future, and created an
Adult Supplemental Needs Trust Fund for him. This was the first time
that a group, rather than an individual's family, has created such a
fund. The film tells this story and humanizes the abstract
statistics of mental retardation, shedding light on how the
intellectually disabled can remain active participants in the
community and how the community builds understanding.
