NOTES |
The film
immediately moves to the scene in front of the |
cathedral
where the fool is being elected and even more |
quickly to
Esmeralda dancing on the steps. At least Hayek |
looks great
and is convincing as someone who would drive |
men to lust
after her. Similar praise can't be given to |
Patinkin's
Quasimodo which is a half-hearted affair in both |
make-up and
performance. The philosophical discussion |
between the
king and Dom Frollo is missing except for a |
bland
exchange about the printing press. The film has an air |
of modernity
which seems parochial especially in the dialogue |
and the long
stares between Esmeralda and Quasimodo and |
Quasimodo
and Frollo. There is a lack of mystery and period |
feel. There
are extended scenes between Esmeralda and |
Quasimodo
which convey little but her beauty and his |
Though the
production is given as shared between the USA |
and Hungary
there are many British actors. |
