After the Italian tragedy Francesca da Rimini

Set in 18th Century Portugese South America.

A Duke is entering into an arranged marriage with the much

younger daughter of a political rival. But she doesn't know he

is so old and has a distorted spine. However the Duke sends

his younger, and good looking brother ahead of him and the

two fall in love. A courtier spies on them, informs the Duke

and he kills them both and then himself. But when the tragic

ending didn't go down well with preview audiences Griffith re-

shot it allowing the young couple to live though the disabled

husband still dies.
