A Duke is
entering into an arranged marriage with the much |

younger
daughter of a political rival. But she doesn't know he |
|
is so old
and has a distorted spine. However the Duke sends |
|
his younger,
and good looking brother ahead of him and the |
|
two fall in
love. A courtier spies on them, informs the Duke |
|
and he kills
them both and then himself. But when the tragic |
|
ending
didn't go down well with preview audiences Griffith re- |
|
shot it
allowing the young couple to live though the disabled |
|
