Lark Jarvis
writes:
One of the better, well-filmed, wittier films in the festival--"Pupendo"
(a Czech film about a sculptor working in restrictive Communist
conditions in the '80's)--The sculptor's son is deaf, and the family
uses sign to communicate with him. In this film, the son's deafness
is a plot consideration only because "special favors" are said to be
what keeps the son out of an inferior "special school," and that is
one of the risks the father runs by running afoul of the Party.
Other than that plot consideration, the son's deafness is treated as
non-issue in his family, and the family communicates with him both
orally and in sign. |
