NOTES After seeing that his older brother might be involved in the

death of a friend a boy, Stephen, is told to keep quiet. Later

he gets a sore throat and has his tonsils out. From this point

he refuses to talk and wants to learn sign language. His

mother unsuccessfully tries hypnosis. Following a fire in their

stables Stephen is taken to an institute for disturbed children.

Of course he rebels but a specialist gets him to say one word.

His mother has a bleeding ulcer and is seriously ill. His

brother continues to put pressure on him to remain quiet. His

best friend at the institute tries to kill herself and his

grandmother dies. However mum comes home well and it

turns out that it was the sheriff who was responsible for the

boy's death. He is charged with 2nd degree murder. Stephen

starts talking again and goes on to teach the deaf.
