Cancer Minor

TITLE |
Other Love, The (1947) |
Karen (Stanwyck),
a famous pianist, arrives at a Swiss |
sanitarium.
She has an examination and an x-ray. But the |
doctor (Niven)
is reluctant to tell her how serious things are. |
"Does she
know how ill she is? No, she doesn't" He says. |
Karen has
some kind of chest complaint (could be cancer) |
which might
be fatal. She smokes until the doctor takes them |
away. But
she won't follow his orders and lives the high life |
until she
realises how ill she is. As she says "She wants to |
smash the
face of the clock." |
The setting
is as far removed from most people's experience |
as can be.
The nurse unpacks her bags and serves her |
breakfast.
The doctor pays a night visit -- because she hears |
She's
supposed to be ill but acts like she's on holiday. She |
flirts with
the doctor and then with a playboy/racing driver. |
Though she
doesn't tell him she is ill. When he does learn |
she is ill
he says he'll take to Egypt (for the climate) but she |
returns to
the sanitorium. The doctor of course is in love with |
her but she
doesn't trust him to tell the truth about her |
condition.
Sloppy and sentimental towards end but she does |
