NOTES |
On the
surface this is the story of a schoolteacher and part- |
|
time farmer,
Joseph,(Hopper) in a long term relationship with |
|
another
teacher, Rosealee, (Irving). The spark has gone out |
|
of their
relationship which developed after the death of |
|
Rosealee's
husband in the war (WWII). He had been a friend |
|
Then onto
the scene arrives a 17 year old schoolgirl, |
|
Catherine,
who blatantly seduces Joseph. Despite the |
|
enormous
risk to his career and hurt to Rosealee he falls |
|
hook, line
and sinker. There is some nudity in this film which |
|
certainly
emphasizes the temptation put before Joseph. |
|
Joseph has a
limp the result of a tractor accident when a |
|
child. The
limp contributes to the suppressed greyness of |
|
Joseph's
character which leaves him so vunerable to |
|
Joseph still
lives with his mother who is dying of cancer. |
|
Catherine's
mother has diabetes. |
|
The actors'
performances raise the film above some of the |
|
