NOTES On the surface this is the story of a schoolteacher and part-

time farmer, Joseph,(Hopper) in a long term relationship with

another teacher, Rosealee, (Irving). The spark has gone out

of their relationship which developed after the death of

Rosealee's husband in the war (WWII). He had been a friend

of Joseph's.

Then onto the scene arrives a 17 year old schoolgirl,

Catherine, who blatantly seduces Joseph. Despite the

enormous risk to his career and hurt to Rosealee he falls

hook, line and sinker. There is some nudity in this film which

certainly emphasizes the temptation put before Joseph.

Joseph has a limp the result of a tractor accident when a

child. The limp contributes to the suppressed greyness of

Joseph's character which leaves him so vunerable to

Catherine's seduction.

Joseph still lives with his mother who is dying of cancer.

Catherine's mother has diabetes.

The actors' performances raise the film above some of the

director's indulgences.
