A teenage
couple in love discover he has cancer. He's the |
|
school
football captain now in a hospital bed with a shaven |
|
head. The
treatment, which we don't see, appears to have |
|
got rid of
the cancer and he returns to school to a tumultuous |
|
welcome. And
he makes one of those speeches so full of |
|
pathos. But
since this has happened within the first half of the |
|
film we know
the cancer will return. When he knows this he |
|
splits up
with his girlfriend who doesn't understand why so |
|
she persists
and asks him. He tells her that even if he doesn't |
|
die he won't
be able to have children and he knows she |
|
wants a big
family. Her message to him is that he's going to |
|
lick this
cancer and must never give up. |
|
Alongside
all this his mother is threatened with the sack |
|
because of
taking time off to look after him. But a friend who |
|
is an
attorney offers to fight for her. One confrontation with |
|
her boss
with much quoting of new federal laws and the boss |
