NOTES Jennifer Jason Leigh plays Tracy who is deaf, blind and

doesn't speak. She lives with her sister. She uses sign and

touch to communicate. Tracy shows some independence,

making coffee, doing the laundry and generally being a skivvy.

She is also seen reading a braille book.

Her sister, a TV newswoman, becomes suspicious of a

neighbour and starts investigating in a rather stupid fashion.

She breaks into his flat and of course he returns while she is

there.

Later as we might expect Tracy becomes the rapist's target.

She defends herself first with a knife, then throws coffee over

him and eventually shoots him with her sister's gun. He

revives but the sister returns and finishes him off. And then if

your suspended disbelief hasn't broken under the weight of

unbelievability Tracy turns to her sister and says "Jane". Now

here's the clincher. Tracy's disability was caused by an

assault when a child and now wonder of wonders another

assault brings back her speech. Perhaps there will be a

sequel when she regains her sight and hearing.

This is a silly film but Leigh is quite good.
