Ben Affleck
plays Matt Murdock/Daredevil who as a child was blinded by
radio-active waste. The upside is that his other senses were
heightened. Of course we all known that blind people have superman
type hearing and can read a face with their fingertips.
Murdock's day job is as a lawyer who will only defend the innocent
which means his colleagues have to take on the majority of cases of
those who are guilty.
At night he is the daredevil, bent on revenge and of course justice.
So it's the innocent by day and the guilty by night, no need for
courts and trials then.
Naturally he's not chastising motorists who double-park but
concentrating on super villains
Yvonne writes:
"I was reading some chat from a blind braille users site about
Daredevil. The people were most concerned about the film furthering
the stereotype of blind people having extraordinary sense of hearing
etc.
I have to say that the film is done so well in showing Daredevil's
'radar sense' and this is done very well indeed. that it is very
clear that this is not within the normal experience of anyone but is
a superhero type power.
the only things he can't do is read print, see details, colours etc.
So he is shown having to fold his money to be able to identify it
etc.
I don't think therefore that it exploits the stereotype at all and
is not really about disability but more about revenge and issues of
right and wrong.
I suppose the disability is used to show his vulnerability. he still
grieves his loss of sight, he is vulnerable to loud noise to which
he is over sensitive etc. He is neither sighted or blind and has no
where to belong. For me, this makes him a more interesting character
but i don't know if blind people would find this exploitative. It
might be."
