Blind Major

NOTES |
Stowe is a
blind violin player who after corneal transplants can see again
though with fitful results. But this is really a |
mundane
thriller about the hunt for a serial killer and Stowe is |
the only
witness. Aidan Quinn is the detective investigating |
who also
gets involved with Stowe. |
Stowe
'playing blind' is on a par with your average star-gazing. |
Plus though
she has been blind since a childhood accident |
(her mother
smashed her face into a mirror) there is an early |
indication
that a corneal transplant will restore her sight. This |
adds an edge
to the mystery element of the film. Even after |
the op. she
has often only a cloudy image because her brain |
has to
'sync' with her eyes. It's called "retroactive vision." |
Initially
she has a transplant in only one eye which means she |
has no depth
of perception and fuzzy, distorted pictures. The |
new eye is
brown, the old blue. And she sometimes has a |
perceptual
delay i.e. sees something perhaps a day later. I |
don't know
how realistic this symptom is but it's great for |
The early
scenes of her living independently are positive. She |
has a guide
dog and she plays violin in a band. Though later |
she's the
hunted, defenceless woman. |
Most
reviewers have liked this film. I didn't despite the |
attractiveness of the leads. |
