NOTES Stowe is a blind violin player who after corneal transplants can see again though with fitful results. But this is really a

mundane thriller about the hunt for a serial killer and Stowe is

the only witness. Aidan Quinn is the detective investigating

who also gets involved with Stowe.

Stowe 'playing blind' is on a par with your average star-gazing.

Plus though she has been blind since a childhood accident

(her mother smashed her face into a mirror) there is an early

indication that a corneal transplant will restore her sight. This

adds an edge to the mystery element of the film. Even after

the op. she has often only a cloudy image because her brain

has to 'sync' with her eyes. It's called "retroactive vision."

Initially she has a transplant in only one eye which means she

has no depth of perception and fuzzy, distorted pictures. The

new eye is brown, the old blue. And she sometimes has a

perceptual delay i.e. sees something perhaps a day later. I

don't know how realistic this symptom is but it's great for

suspense.

The early scenes of her living independently are positive. She

has a guide dog and she plays violin in a band. Though later

she's the hunted, defenceless woman.

Most reviewers have liked this film. I didn't despite the

attractiveness of the leads.
