NOTES Loosely adapted from Chekhov's Uncle Vanya and set on a

sheep farm in the Australian outback (New South Wales) in

1919. Now Uncle Vanya is one of the great plays of the 20th

Century (about 1904) but this is not a great film. It's not that

bad and it does achieve some of atmosphere of the Chekhov

original which is something like playing croquet on a lawn lain

over quicksand.

Suffice to say that this is a drama about a family in which the

real issues simmer until near the end. People are not quite

what they seem. And others who perhaps shouldn't have

passionate affairs.

There is a young man, Billy, who has lost a leg during The

Great War.
