Amputee

NOTES |
The story
has probably been used before and certainly has |
since. But
in Don Siegel's (Dirty Harry) hands this is a |
competent,
enjoyable though flawed thriller. |
At the start
of the film when the three members of gang are |
going to rob
a bank. Charley (Matthau) is disguised as an old |
man and to
make him appear even less threatening he has |
The bank is
robbed but the cops are on the job and the |
woman member
of the gang is shot. But soon they found |
they've made
an even bigger mistake. They've stolen Mafia |
money and
are pursued by gangsters as well as cops. |
Varrick goes
to a gun dealer trying to find a contact who will |
make them
false passports. The gun seller is in a wheelchair |
and is a
left, below the knee amputee. |
Andy
Robinson who is Varrick's violent sidekick later |
appeared as
the killer in Dirty Harry. |
A little
reflection on this film and you're left with a bad taste. |
Because it's
on the side of the baddies. Charley Varrick, |
contrasted
with his sidekick and the Mafia hit man, is a good |
guy and
despite the killings comes out on top, and with a new |
woman. So is
it O.K. to kill a cop and rob banks? |
