Rebellion, Die (1993) (TV)
Austrian film about a soldier who loses a leg in the Imperial wars (or
may be WWI). The story is from the novel (1924) by Joseph Roth who
writes: "He believed in a just god. One who handed out shrapnel,
amputations, and medals to the deserving. Viewed in the correct light,
the loss of a leg wasn't so very bad, and the joy of receiving a medal
was considerable. An invalid might enjoy the respect of the world. An
invalid with a medal could depend on that of the government."
He makes a living playing a barrel organ but then gets into trouble and
hits a policeman. He goes to gaol and loses his licence (to play in the
street). After release he becomes a toilet attendant.
