NOTES B/W and Colour

There are two stories here. One is that of Clarissa Dalloway

who is preparing for a party which will be a defining moment in

her life. We learn in flashbacks that she chose to marry a

rich politician while sacrificing more fulfilling relationships.

The other story is of Septimus Smith who is suffering from

delayed shell-shock and has visions of a man called Evans.

He talks of suicide and when his doctor is going to put him in

hospital he kills himself by jumping from a window. The film

suggests that the people around him and his doctor have

failed to understand what is wrong with him.

His doctor relates at Mrs. Dalloway's party what happened to

Smith which in turn upsets her and she contemplates suicide

. (Virginia Woolf committed suicide).

From the novel by Virgina Woolf
