NOTES B/W

One of the 8 Whistler series of films in which Richard Dix

plays different characters. In this film he has lost his memory

and a woman helps him to get it back. Unfortunately he turns

out to be a killer.

This series was apparently very successful but watching the

film now one wonders why. The actors are hardly

charismatic and some strange things happen.

The film starts with the man, William Everest, walking along

the road as if in a dream. He's nearly knocked down by a car.

Then he goes into a cafΘ where a woman reads his fortune.

The cards foretell death within 24 hours. He leaves the cafe

but she rushes after him. He feels dizzy after his little

accident with the car so she suggests they sit in an empty car

parked at the kerb. This is when he tells her he can't even

remember his name. He knows only that he has to do

something in the next 24 hours. She looks through his wallet

and finds out who he is. His explanation for not having done

so earlier is "If I'd had my wits about me." At this point the

owner of the car returns and doesn't bat an eyelid at these

strangers sitting in the back. He even offers them a lift.

That is the level of reality in this film.
