TITLE |
Mister Buddwing (1966) |
An amnesiac
searches for his identity via a number of women. |
James Garner
struggles with the role but he's such an amiable |
actor we
accept him. Mr Buddwing who has invented his name |
having lost
his own finds himself calling after woman who he |
thinks he
recognises as part of his life. Quite sensibly he only |
calls after
attractive women like Jean Simmons, Suzanne |
Pleshette
and Katherine Ross. Maybe he hasn't lost his memory |
but gained
some testerone. One woman he picks up, Pleshette, |
takes him
home hoping a bowl of food and a long leash will keep |
him there.
Another ,Simmons, picks him up as the lost piece in a |
scavenger
hunt. Her basket complete she begins to philosophise. |
Throw in a
newspaper headline which reads "Dangerous Mental |
Patient
Escapes" and we become curious about the film's |
message. But
very soon Mr. Buddwing's search for identity has |
run off the
edge of the screen. |
From the
novel by Evan Hunter who wrote "The Birds" screenplay. |
