NOTES A woman gets off her knees and bangs her head on the kitchen

cupboard. Haven't we all? But she falls on the floor and starts

calling "Mammy". Now she thinks she's 16, not married and still

at school. At hospital she talks to psychiastrist then husband

takes her to other part of hospital where she has a catscan.

Still a patient she walks out of the hospital and her husband

complains "What kind of hospital is this?" But he had been sitting

in a chair next to her bed and had fallen asleep. And I don't think

his complaint was meant ironically.

And where has she gone? To her parents' home where she asks

her dad what has happened to his hair.

In fact she's been married 20 years and has a sixteen year old

daughter. In the way these films have of illustrating the search for

oneself she goes through the junk in her parents' attic.

Later she meets a nice, caring and handsome psychiatrist who

consoles her with more junk like "You can't go back until you go

forward".

What follows is a reassesment of her life. She always wanted to

be a painter and she does this to loud 'teenage' music saying "it

gets me in the mood". Well a teenager might say this.

Of course the knock on the head has got her out of the deep rut

of married life and being a mother had got her into, having to

subsume her own ambitions in the interests of others.

But there's a happy ending because she re-marries her husband.

I think this is called affirmation.

Even if you're sick with 'flu and the remote's fallen on the floor,

make the effort. You know which button to press, amnesia never reaches so far.
