It is 1951,
the McCarthy era and Peter Applelton a |

is riding high until the committee for un-American activities
hauls him up for (unwittingly) attending a communist party
meeting while at college. His slide downhill is rapid and while
driving drunk he crashes. The result is that he ends up in a small
town with no memory. There he is mistaken for war hero
thought missing in action. His amnesia is a device to
reveal the hopes and expectations of the townsfolk which generally
over ride their common sense. Carrey is good in a dramatic role
(without the goofy faces) and generally remains interesting
throughout.
The possibilities here for social commentary are endless. |
